Voice Recognition

This includes information about using voice recognition tools. This will explore Voice Attack (VA), which provides an excellent means of supplemental control, especially when flying while using virtual reality (VR) headsets.

Voice Attack

Voice Attack (VA) provides an easy-to-use voice recognition system, allowing the control of an aircraft's systems, by using voice commands. The trial version of VoiceAttack provides a single profile with up to twenty commands. Please purchase the full version and support the developer -- only $10.

Voice Training

Before you can use VoiceAttack effectively, it will be necessary to train your speech engine. This is critical for best performance and accuracy. Once you have completed training, you can save your training file so you don't have to re-training it again if you change computers or reinstall Windows. (See "Backup Your Speech Engine Training File" below.)

Microsoft includes a speech recognition engine with Windows. Out of the box, it does a marginal job, but, with a little bit of training, this speech engine becomes quite accurate.

To train your speech engine:
Click "Start" and then "Control Panel".
(Note: If you cannot see the "Speech Recognition" item, click on the "View" list and select either, "large icons" or "small icons".)
        Click on, "Speech Recognition".
Click on, "Train your computer to better understand you".
        Follow the steps provided.

Note: Running through the training process two times produces the best results.

Push-to-Talk (PTT) Button

Although VA may operate with a "hot mic" (a microphone that is always on/active), it works best in a simulation environment when a push-to-talk (PTT) button is used. In this case, the user holds down the PTT when speaking. When using the Thrustmaster T.16000M HOTAS (stick and throttle combo), it works well to map the VA PTT to the top button on the stick (Button #2). This can then be used along with a PTT for Discord (typically mapped to Button #1 on the throttle). Users can thus use the stick button to talk to VoiceAttack and use the throttle button to talk over Discord.

Backup Your Speech Engine Training File

To backup your file, download the VoiceAttack Speech Profile Manager Tool.

Simply extract the executable from the zip file and run it. You'll see buttons for exporting and importing. To export, just select the profile that you want to export and click, 'Export'. Make sure to put your file in a safe place. To import, click the, 'Import' button and select your backed-up training file.
